The event will transpire in daytime skies for a majority of the continent, but don’t despair Venus is easily visible to the unaided eye near the limb of the daytime Moon. It’s also the best of the year, well positioned for North America. This is the final of seven naked eye occultations of planets by the Moon in 2015, three of which involve Venus. Aside from the grief plot, there was also a really substantial friendship plot that was developed well and brought out the true meaning of friendship, before adding a romantic layer on top. It was really the writing that shined in this, it was so well done the author had this deep rooted understanding of grief and was able to put into words what it truly means to lose someone or something really close or important. Despite the somber plots and storylines, this was still such a beautiful novel. This novel was filled with deep grief, loss and sadness. They are now in forced proximity and can either hate each other or learn to become friends again. Franklin, chairman of the History Department of Brooklyn College, already John Hope Franklin's "Reconstruction: After the Civil War" fills this yawning gap, and with notable balance and judicious temper, tells an old story in a new light. Reflecting modern scholarship and current ideas, has been painfully lacking. A few, like Eric McKitrick, have published important studies modifying the traditional view. While American thought in general was rejecting racist ideas of the inferiority of the Negro, with their corollaries of segregation, disfranchisement and discrimination, our historiesĬontinued to treat the attempt to establish Negro equality during Reconstruction as a mistake, a crime, or even an absurdity and to cast the champions of equality in the role of villains.įor some time now historians have recognized this anomaly increasingly they have called for a new version of Reconstruction history. NovemFreedom Without Equality By DAVID M. So does Shiela she's gone from a completely facetious know-it-all to a girl next door who may be slightly bossy and nerdy yet is also earnest and serious-and appears to nurse some genuine affection for Peter. He even has a generous side-he gave up his precious duck to console his poor plush-monkey-deprived little brother. Peter, for his part, is headstrong but less bitter, a vast improvement over the Peter of the books. There are enough cute moments that we get the idea that even Peter, in between bouts of annoyance, is somewhat charmed. Fudge is still an annoying little brother, but he's a witty and well-meaning kid-sure, he busted the antique table, but all he wanted was to wrestle with his brother and sure, he extorted money to buy his parents an anniversary present, but COME ON! He's a little kid. Fudge himself was a total brat Peter was a self-righteous and disrespectful pomp Shiela was, even from her own perspective, completely dishonest, pretentious and unconvincing the Hatchers were overindulgent dupes (and the mother quite possibly a tranq addict). Her "Fudge" series suffered from another unforgivable flaw: lack of sympathetic characters (except, perhaps, for Jimmy Fargo and his father). Judy Blume has been oft-derided for her extremely pessimistic and hyperrealist (sometimes) conceptions of late childhood and early adolescence. She speaks at various women’s functions and has taught at writers’ conferences.
